Shinnecock Hills Golf Club

Shinnecock’s present course opened for the 1931 season. It was designed by William Flynn and built by Dick Wilson of Toomey and Flynn. That is a different architectural starting point from the Club’s founding in 1891.¹

A new routing for the wind

Willie Davis laid out the first twelve holes in 1891; Willie Dunn added six in 1895. Charles Blair Macdonald, assisted by Seth Raynor, rebuilt several holes in 1916. Those interventions preceded Flynn’s commission, making the present course the product of a later architectural chapter.²

A proposed road forced the larger change. Plans announced in 1927 would cut through several Macdonald holes south of the clubhouse. The Club purchased 108 acres to the north and east, giving Flynn new ground for the redesign completed four years later. The road and purchase explain the shift in the course’s footprint.²

Flynn used the land’s natural features to create strategic choices and varied exposure to the wind. Three sets of holes form triangles within the routing, changing the direction of play as the round unfolds. A prevailing wind therefore meets successive shots from different angles, becoming part of the course’s recurring challenge.²
