Shinnecock Hills Golf Club
Shinnecock Hills was founded in 1891 and became one of the five founding member Clubs of the USGA. Its present course dates to 1931, so the institution’s earliest national championships belong to an earlier golfing landscape on the Southampton property.1

An institution beyond one routing
The clubhouse predates that routing by nearly four decades. Built in 1892 by McKim, Mead and White, it underwent expansions and renovations while retaining its recognizable character. A major restoration was completed in 2016.1
In 1896, Shinnecock hosted both the U.S. Amateur and the second U.S. Open. The U.S. Women’s Amateur followed in 1900. Those separate competitions place women’s and men’s amateur golf alongside the Open in the Club’s early championship history, well before the course assumed its current form.1
The Club made a consequential land purchase after a road threatened existing holes in 1927. Acquiring 108 acres to the north and east made the subsequent redesign possible. The institution continued, but the ground over which its golfers competed changed substantially.2
The 1977 Walker Cup added international team competition to that history. Shinnecock then hosted the U.S. Open in 1986, bringing the championship back after its nineteenth-century visit.1
