Donald Ross
Donald Ross was born in Dornoch, Scotland, in 1872. He moved to the Boston area in 1899 to work as the golf professional at Oakley Country Club. The following year, he accepted James Walker Tufts’s offer to serve as Pinehurst’s professional.1
From Dornoch to an American practice
His training brought several kinds of work together. At St Andrews, Ross apprenticed with Old Tom Morris and learned about course design, maintenance and greens. Back in Dornoch, he worked as a professional and greenkeeper before leaving for America.1
Pinehurst’s account of his design practice emphasizes his attention to the contours of greens and the sandy ground that recalled Scotland. The crowned putting surfaces at No. 2 made the approach and the recovery shot central parts of the test, with small slopes carrying substantial consequences.2
Ross designed Aronimink and Seminole and redesigned East Lake in 1913, connecting three distinct course histories.345
