Cleveland Golf
Three numbers tell the beginning of Cleveland’s Tour Action 588: 50°, 56° and 60°. Those were its lofts when it arrived in 1988. Loft describes how far the clubface tilts back from vertical when the club is set down for a shot.12

Roger Cleveland established Cleveland Classics Golf Company in 1979. Its early work included replicas of older clubs. The 588 became part of the company’s own design history, with a name that still appears on later wedges.13
In 1990, the 588’s pitching wedge changed from 50° to 49°, and a 53° option joined the range. Cleveland’s chronology describes that addition as filling the space between the pitching and sand wedges. It is a useful detail to look for on an old club: the model name alone does not identify its loft or place in the set.1
