Portland

Alister MacKenzie supplied a new Portland routing in 1921. The course runs inland, east and south of the Old, giving Royal Troon another full eighteen-hole layout beyond its championship shoreline route.¹

MacKenzie’s inland Portland routing

Portland’s seventeenth, Fullarton, recalls the estate owned by the Duke of Portland. The short par four asks for a drive between whins on the right and a ditch on the left before a pitch to a bunkered green, combining local land history with a tightly defined playing problem.²
