The Ailsa hosted the 1977 Open confrontation between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. The final hole’s name, Duel in the Sun, recalls that championship.¹

The Ailsa’s championship coast

Martin Ebert’s later work strengthened the course’s coastal sequence. Further changes in 2025 placed the seventh green closer to the cliff edge and revised the eighth’s tees and approach line.¹
