Southern Hills West

Southern Hills’ West Nine opened in 1992 as a Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design. Added to the existing Championship Course, it gave the Club 27 holes of golf and a second architectural lineage, more than half a century after Perry Maxwell’s original eighteen opened.³⁵

Nine holes from changing recreation

Its site reflects changes in the way members used the property. Southern Hills had originally offered riding, polo and skeet shooting alongside golf. The stables burned in 1976, while use of the polo field and skeet range declined. That land became available for a different recreational purpose.¹

The Club engaged Coore and Crenshaw to turn the former activity grounds into nine additional holes. The West therefore belongs to the history of Southern Hills’ expansion: it was a new course on repurposed land, rather than a restoration of Maxwell’s Championship Course.¹³

The commission also carried a connection beyond Tulsa. William K. Warren Jr., Southern Hills’ board president in 1991, worked with Coore and Crenshaw on the West Nine. Contemporary coverage of Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course dedication records that this relationship led to their selection for the university’s course.⁴

When Southern Hills later brought in Hanse and Wagner for work beginning in 2018, the stated restoration target was the Championship Course. The West Nine’s 1992 authorship remains separate from that project and from Maxwell’s original commission.²
