Oakland Hills Country Club - North

Ross drew the course in 1922. Construction followed in 1923 under his associate Walter B. Hatch, and the Club’s dated timeline records the opening as May 13, 1924. That sequence distinguishes the construction year from the moment the new eighteen entered play.¹

In 1933 the course began operating to daily-fee players as North Hills. Members voted in 1967 to restore it to private use. Robert Trent Jones then redesigned the course in 1968 and 1969; a bridge across Maple Road connected the two sides of the property.¹

The Club describes the North as shorter than the South but demanding accuracy. Its trees and bunkers give the second course a character of its own, with both walking and cart rounds accommodated in the caddie programme. The landscape is part of the playing test.²

For the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur, the North served as the stroke-play co-host. Competitors played both Oakland Hills courses during qualifying before match play moved entirely to the South. Hosting those preliminary rounds placed the North within the championship without making it the venue for the final.³
