Ross also designed a separate No. 2 course, opened in 1930. Rees Jones restored the original course in the early 1990s; that original layout is the course followed here.²

For Green, historical research became a design instrument. A sharp aerial photograph from 1949, earlier ground photographs and accounts of shots played by Bobby Jones helped recover features that modern golfers no longer knew. The evidence also left room for Green’s interpretation of the course.³

Rebuilt putting surfaces introduced varied contours, plateaus and projecting sections. Grass-faced bunkers reached into landing areas, requiring decisions about carrying, avoiding or laying short of the sand. The short eighth was also reworked with its green closer to the lake, creating a more tempting attacking hole.³

At the fifteenth, removing the greenside bunker made the water more consequential. Short grass behind the reshaped green can carry an inaccurate approach toward the hazard. Here the restoration changed the recovery problem as much as the appearance, demanding thought about where a missed shot would finish.³
