In his account of the site, Bill Coore explained that other architects proposed flattening the ridges to fill the wet ground. Ross preserved their elevation instead, incorporating drainage through the basin. The decision retained the landforms that now distinguish the course.²

The holes repeatedly approach, leave and cross those ridges at different angles. Elevated greens and tees alter the exposure to wind, while changes of direction prevent a player from settling into one comfortable adjustment. The terrain supplies variety without requiring each hole to occupy a separate landscape.²

Subsequent work belongs to the course’s history too. The GCSAA’s 2021 fact sheet records Dick Wilson’s renovation in 1957 and Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw’s work during 2016-18. Those dated interventions qualify any suggestion that the present course is an untouched survival of 1929.¹

For the 2021 Walker Cup, the course was prepared as a par 72 over 7,265 yards. Its sand-based ground and extensive bunkering framed that competition, but the governing variable remained the routing’s repeated changes in wind direction, requiring distance control to be recalculated throughout the round.¹
