The American Society of Golf Course Architects identifies Canyata among Bob Lohmann’s Illinois designs, alongside Boulder Ridge and the Merit Club. This places the course within the practice he established in suburban Chicago in 1984.²

The setting recorded by the Club is the farmland outside Marshall, where the Forsythe family commissioned golf for its own use. The contrast between that agricultural location and a purpose-built private course is central to Canyata’s account of its beginnings.¹
