Winged Foot The West Course

Winged Foot opened in June 1923 with two courses by A.W. Tillinghast. The West hosted its first U.S. Open in 1929. Its steep, divided greens remain central to the way the Club describes the course.²³

The choices around the greens

The opening hole ends at a green pitched sharply from back to front, with two long spines dividing its surface. The Club’s account recalls Jack Nicklaus putting off that green in the opening round of the 1974 U.S. Open and taking four putts altogether.³

At the par-three third, a two-level green offered a different decision. According to the Club’s tour, Billy Casper deliberately played short in all four rounds of the 1959 U.S. Open, pitched onto the green and made par each time.³

Gil Hanse’s restoration, completed in 2017, reopened the fronts of greens to running approaches. In his account, that gave members another way onto the surface while retaining the demanding character of Tillinghast’s course.¹
