Somerset Hills Country Club was organized in 1899 for recreation and social life. Its founders were largely New York City residents, a background reflected in the word “country” in the Club’s name.1

A country retreat moves to Bernardsville
The first property lay along the Raritan River, straddling Bernards and Bedminster townships. In 1918 the Club moved to its present home in Bernardsville, where golf and grass-court tennis became enduring parts of its life.1
