University of Pennsylvania alumni founded Philadelphia Cricket Club in 1854 to continue playing together after graduation. The Club settled in Chestnut Hill on land provided by Henry H. Houston in 1883.1

Cricket, tennis and then golf
Its sporting history extends beyond golf. The first U.S. Women’s Lawn Tennis Championship was held here in 1887, followed by national women’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions. Cricket itself declined in the 1920s before a revival in the early 1990s.1
