Founded in 1899 as Homewood Country Club, the institution now known as Flossmoor Golf Club helped draw visitors to the developing suburb. Illinois Central excursion trips offered passengers a free lunch in hopes that they would settle nearby.1

Railway excursions and a new golf community
Golf remained closely tied to the area’s growth. By the village’s incorporation in 1924, its courses, available land and railway access had helped attract a permanent community.1
