Birkdale began in 1889 with nine holes at Shaw Hills. The Club decided to move in 1894 and established its present home in 1897.1

Royal Birkdale Golf Club (1014138) history
Its Art Deco clubhouse opened in 1935 to a design by George E. Tonge. Royal status followed in 1951, and the first Open Championship at the course took place in 1954.1
