The Country Club
Founded in 1882, The Country Club began with interests extending beyond golf, including a horse-racing track. Members laid out six golf holes in 1893. The Club became one of the five founding members of the United States Golf Association the following year.1

Golf grew into the grounds
Its courses developed through successive additions. Clyde and Squirrel form the Main Course; Primrose is the third nine. Championship golf draws on that larger property through the Open Course, a composite routing assembled from the existing holes.1
The championship record reaches beyond the U.S. Open. Genevieve Hecker won the 1902 U.S. Women’s Amateur here. In 1913, Francis Ouimet defeated Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in an eighteen-hole U.S. Open playoff, giving the young amateur a place in the Club’s history.2
