Champions Golf Club
Jackie Burke Jr. and Jimmy Demaret founded Champions in their hometown of Houston in 1957. The project followed Burke’s victories in both the Masters and PGA Championship the previous year, turning tournament success into a lasting golf institution.1

The Texas Golf Hall of Fame records a revealing part of their preparation: before the course was grassed, Burke and Demaret played shots from potential tees in different winds. Their examination of bare ground was an attempt to judge how the future course would actually play.1
