In the early 1920s, Marion residents bought land on Butler Point, previously occupied by the Beverly Yacht Club. They saw the possibility of a seaside course with qualities found in British golf.1

Kittansett opened for play in 1923. Thirty years later, it hosted the Walker Cup, won by the United States over Great Britain and Ireland, 9 to 3.1
