Congressional Country Club
Congressmen Oscar Bland and O. R. Luhring proposed Congressional in 1921 as a place where legislators and businesspeople could meet socially. Herbert Hoover supported the project, and lifetime memberships helped finance it. The opening celebration on May 23, 1924 drew more than seven thousand invited guests.1

From political meeting place to training ground
During the Second World War the Club took on a very different purpose. Leased to the government in 1943, it became a training location for the Office of Strategic Services, including instruction in espionage, sabotage and parachuting. It returned to members in 1945.1
