Muirfield
Golf began at Muirfield in 1891, with the course extended to eighteen holes for The Open the following year. The 1892 championship was the first played over seventy-two holes.1

Muirfield’s first Open Championships
The Honourable Company drew on the experience of its accomplished amateur members when considering improvements. Robert Maxwell contributed to that work in the years before the First World War.1
