Newport Country Club
Newport Country Club was founded in Rhode Island in 1893 and became one of the five founding members of the USGA. Whitney Warren designed its permanent clubhouse, built during the winter of 1894–95.1

Where the first USGA championships were played
In October 1895, Newport hosted the first USGA Amateur and Open championships. Charles B. Macdonald won the Amateur; Newport assistant professional Horace Rawlins won the Open, played over nine holes four times. A century later, Tiger Woods won the 1995 U.S. Amateur here.1
