Engineers Country Club
Members of Manhattan’s Engineers Club established Engineers Country Club in 1917 on the former W. R. Willet estate at Roslyn Harbor. The new institution soon faced a destructive fire: without nearby hydrants, firefighters drew water from a pond to fight the clubhouse blaze.1

Engineers, an estate and an early fire
Despite that difficult beginning, the Club hosted the 1919 PGA Championship and the 1920 U.S. Amateur. Its emergence as a national venue followed almost immediately after its founding, before a long institutional history had time to accumulate.1
