Hershey Country Club

Milton Hershey founded Hershey Country Club in 1930 to give residents a place for recreation and relaxation. Golf was part of a broader provision for the community, rather than an activity detached from the town around it.1

Recreation within Hershey’s community

That recreational ambition extended to younger players. The Club records a separate Juvenile Golf Club course, designed by Maurice McCarthy in 1932 for players seventeen and younger. Later renamed Spring Creek, it originally charged thirty-five cents for nine holes.1

The recorded venue and champion preserve the official PGA Championship History entry’s published text. The champion-only winner field is intentionally separate from the official match-play result: 1-up over Sam Snead.
  7. PGA Championship host record The 1940 PGA record names Hershey Country Club. The dated PGA account explicitly identifies the West Course. A conflicting 1939 PGA reference on the current Club timeline is not used as championship authority. Host and competition dates: www.pgachampionship.com
