St. Louis Country Club began in 1892 as a polo institution. It moved to Clayton three years later and added nine-hole golf, then sought a farther-west property suited to eighteen holes.1

From polo to a westward golfing move
Golf chairman George Herbert Walker commissioned Charles Blair Macdonald for the new course. The move established the Ladue property that later hosted national amateur championships for both men and women, as well as the U.S. Open.1
