Winged Foot Golf Club
Winged Foot began in 1921 with a group drawn mainly from the New York Athletic Club. Its founders commissioned A.W. Tillinghast to build two courses, and the Club opened for play in June 1923.1

Two courses, one commission
The East and West were arranged as four alternating loops on the Mamaroneck property. Golf-course architecture was only part of the undertaking: Clifford Wendehack designed the clubhouse, which the National Park Service dates to 1925.2
The two courses acquired separate championship histories. The West hosted the 1929 U.S. Open. The East later hosted the 1957 and 1972 U.S. Women’s Opens and the inaugural U.S. Senior Open in 1980. In 2004, the U.S. Amateur used both courses.21
Winged Foot’s own history also follows the professionals who worked at the Club. Craig Wood served as head professional when he won the Masters and U.S. Open in 1941; Claude Harmon, hired in 1946, won the Masters in 1948. Their careers connect the Club’s daily life with championships played elsewhere.1
