A Club connected to the city
Transport helped connect that ambition to the membership. The National Register nomination for nearby Twin Maples records that Keller, publisher of the New York Social Register, owned the Rahway Valley Railroad. Its 1904 extension to Summit allowed members to leave the train at his golf club, linking the Springfield grounds to the surrounding rail network.4
After the nine-hole layout and Old Course, A.W. Tillinghast built two courses alongside one another between 1918 and 1922.2
The clubhouse formed another part of the Club’s identity. Baltusrol’s fact sheet dates its Tudor Revival building to 1910. The building and the courses therefore belong to different stages of development, even though visitors encounter them together on the same property.3
In 2014, Baltusrol became a National Historic Landmark in recognition of its importance to Tillinghast’s work. That designation locates its significance in golf-course architecture as well as the national championships the Club has hosted.1
