Deane Beman wanted a tournament home owned by the PGA TOUR. After an unsuccessful effort to buy Sawgrass Country Club, the Fletcher family sold the TOUR 415 acres of wetlands for one dollar.1

A permanent home for the players
TPC Sawgrass opened in 1980 and first hosted THE PLAYERS in 1982. Jerry Pate won that inaugural championship on the new course.1
