Boston Golf Club
Boston Golf Club was conceived around the early twentieth-century tradition of clubs built primarily for golf. Its published guiding principles place the course, brisk play and a strong caddie programme at the centre of the member-owned institution.1

A Club built around golf
That focus is expressed in the facilities: a small golf shop, a rustic clubhouse and a cottage for a visiting foursome. The founders’ model deliberately excluded adjoining residential development, a hotel, tennis courts and a swimming pool.1
When John Mineck hired Gil Hanse, an acquaintance said he had never heard of the architect. Mineck’s reply was brief.3
“You will.”3
Hanse and Jim Wagner later returned for Mineck’s memorial tournament. In 2023, Mineck’s foundation announced an annual $25,000 scholarship to support course workers and their families through education.3
The flag & the clubhouse
From the Club’s mark to the eighteenth green.
A flag made to look weathered
The Club’s flag uses nine vertical stripes associated with the Sons of Liberty. Its design presentation specified aged red, off-white and deliberate distressing; the irregular pole recalls an earlier stake emblem.2
A second life for one oak
Founders John Mineck and Rob Ketterson met through the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts and requested wood from the property wherever possible. Woodworker Hank Gilpin made a 22-foot clubhouse table from a single red oak felled at the ninth hole.4
The patio joins the finish
During Boston’s 2026 U.S. Amateur qualifying, Aidan O’Donovan’s final 15-foot birdie putt hit the back of the cup. His 67 shared the lowest score. Spectators on the clubhouse patio above the eighteenth green applauded as he punched the air.6

Shipwreck
5th hole · Par 4The fifth hole, Shipwreck, is a short par four where the safer drive can leave a harder approach. Challenging the bunkers and mounds on the right opens a better angle to an exceptionally narrow green. The position of the drive matters more than the hole’s modest length suggests.5
