Pebble Beach nearly became housing lots before Samuel Morse persuaded the owners to use the coastal property for golf. He commissioned amateur architects Jack Neville and Douglas Grant to lay out the course.1

Saving the shoreline for golf
An early opening exposed unfinished turf and rocky fairways. The course closed for almost a year before reopening on Washington’s Birthday in 1919, the date later used for its centennial.1
