Aronimink Golf Club
Aronimink began with cricketers making room for another game. Its roots reach to southwest Philadelphia in 1896, three decades before the Club acquired the Newtown Square property where Donald Ross would lay out its enduring golf course.1

From Belmont cricket to a championship home
In December 1896, Harrison Townsend led members of Belmont Cricket Club in laying out rudimentary holes at 52nd Street and Chester Avenue. Their Belmont Golf Association incorporated as Aronimink Golf Club in 1900, giving the golfing institution a separate name and legal footing.2
The Club changed grounds twice before reaching its present home: to 54th Street and Whitby Avenue in 1902, then to Drexel Hill in 1913. The purchase of 300 acres in 1926 led to its move into Charles Barton Keen’s clubhouse on Memorial Day 1928.2
Championship hosting became a recurring part of Club life. Gary Player won the 1962 PGA Championship here; John Fought followed in the 1977 U.S. Amateur, and John Jacobs in the 2003 Senior PGA Championship. Those events brought different generations and categories of competitors to the same institution.2
