Fishers Island Club emerged from the Ferguson family’s effort to turn former east-end pastureland into a summer residential colony. Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. planned the larger development, while Seth Raynor was engaged for its golf course.1

Golf within the Olmsted Plan
The course and original clubhouse opened on July 1, 1926. The clubhouse’s substantial Norman farmhouse form helped explain the nickname Big Club. During World War II the building served as a Navy training center and a base for secret harbor-floor sonar experiments.1
