John McNeely and Wayne Huizenga founded Diamond Creek in 2003. In an interview with LINKS, McNeely explained that they wanted a golf club distinct from the nearby communities where membership was tied to buying property.1

Diamond Creek history
The site was a former sheep ranch near Banner Elk. McNeely approached Tom Fazio at his North Carolina office without consulting another architect, setting up a local collaboration in the Blue Ridge Mountains.1
