Columbia Country Club
Columbia Golf Club began in Washington in 1898, moving through several early sites. When it had to leave the Marshall Brown estate at the end of 1908, the institution disbanded. About two hundred members formed Columbia Country Club, which opened at its present Maryland location on January 1, 1911.1

Re-formed after losing its ground
The 1921 U.S. Open brought an unusual presentation ceremony. President Warren Harding awarded Jim Barnes the trophy after Barnes finished nine strokes ahead of Walter Hagen and host professional Fred McLeod. The foundation’s history identifies this as the only U.S. Open trophy presentation by a sitting president.1
