Canterbury opened for play on July 1, 1922. Herbert Strong was both its course architect and one of its founding members, connecting the institution’s beginnings directly to its design.1

The Club’s professional staff also shaped its history. Jack H. Way combined an interest in architecture with an emphasis on conditioning; his successor Henry Picard became an influential teacher, and Ben Hogan later dedicated Power Golf to him.1
