Royal Troon
Troon began with six holes laid out by Charlie Hunter in 1878. George Strath expanded the course to eighteen six years later, establishing a longer route through the dunes beside the Firth of Clyde.1

A six-hole beginning beside the Clyde
The stone clubhouse designed by Henry Edward Clifford followed in 1888. The Club received its royal designation during its 1978 centenary, a later institutional distinction separate from its original foundation.1
