Piping Rock began in 1911 as a social and equestrian club. Charles Blair Macdonald became its first golf chairman, bringing course design into a property already organized around other outdoor sports.1

The polo ground remained central to the golf routing and later became the practice range. That inherited open space helps explain the course’s unusual arrangement around the middle of the property.1
