James Walker Tufts bought cut-over Sandhills land in 1895 to establish a health retreat. His plan combined a New England-style village with paths, greenery and accommodation intended for middle-class visitors.1

Pinehurst Cc history
The Holly Inn opened on December 31, 1895, followed by the Carolina Hotel in 1901. Riding, tennis and other recreation preceded the golf courses that would eventually define the resort.1
