Justin Rose won his first major at Merion’s East Course in the 2013 U.S. Open. His four-round total of 281, one over par, left him two strokes ahead of Jason Day and Phil Mickelson.12
A Sunday decided at Merion
Played from June 13 to 16, the championship ended with nobody under par. Rose’s rounds were 71, 69, 71 and 70. Day and Mickelson tied for second at three over.1
Rose began Sunday two strokes behind Mickelson. An even-par 70 brought him through. At the eighteenth, he used driver and 4-iron on the hole associated with Hogan’s 1950 approach, then made par to finish his championship.2
The victory made Rose the first English U.S. Open champion since Tony Jacklin in 1970. For Merion, it added another winner to a history already embedded in the course; for Rose, it changed the meaning of a career first noticed fifteen years earlier at Royal Birkdale.23
