Architect

A.W. Tillinghast

At Baltusrol, A.W. Tillinghast undertook a project on the scale of an entire club: two courses built beside each other at the same time. His Upper and Lower courses opened in 1922, giving the property the pair that still defines it.2

Two courses, one commission

Golf had occupied the grounds before Tillinghast, first on nine holes and then on the Old Course of 1895. His Upper and Lower were designed and built between 1918 and 1922, beginning a new chapter on the same property.2

At Winged Foot, the founders also commissioned two courses. The Club opened in June 1923; its West Course hosted the U.S. Open six years later. The East belonged to the original commission as well.1

Tillinghast also explained golf in print. He became editor of Golf Illustrated in 1933 and, after his appointment as the PGA of America’s consulting architect in 1935, wrote for The Professional Golfer of America. The Tillinghast Association’s archive includes more than 400 of his published works.3
